ROBOTS CONTROL TRADING

Volatility over the past few trading sessions is due to a combination of factors but most prominently is the recent spike in interest rates.  The ten year treasury has risen almost +0.30% within a week, which is a large move in a short time period for the bond market.

COMPUTERIZED TRADING

This also happened last February.  Then, as now, sudden changes in interest rates can cause stocks to be volatile, the recent selloff is an example.  On February 27th Forbes wrote “There was quite a spike in interest rates the last week of February with the 10-Year T-Note spiking from a 1.36% level as of the close on Wednesday to as high as 1.60% ….. a lot of damage was done.”

Most trading on Wall Street is through computerized trading and once the machines get ahold of a headline, markets can move quick.  In fact, JP Morgan estimates (chart below) that only 9.9% of equity trading is driven by fundamental analysis.

PLUSSES AND HOLDINGS

The dissipation of Covid Delta, liquidity in the system, and continued economic expansion are all benefits to the U.S. markets.  The continued reopening of the economy should benefit our Blue Chip and Large Cap Growth holdings.  In my opinion our holdings are holding up rather well.  Some are close to our trailing stops.  Reversals generally happen as quickly as the market pullback so we should know soon what a stock market recovery will look like.

PULLBACK LIKE THE OTHERS, SO FAR

This pullback is like the others so far (although the underlying reasons are different of course).  The chart of the NASDAQ below is representative of many of our Large Cap Growth holdings.

Our accounts did well in the fourth quarter last year, and into 2021, and you can see the index did the same.  Over the spring and into the summer Large Cap Growth stocks were flat, having pulled back twice.  The uptrend resumed in June, July was volatile and almost unchanged, August was a great month, and so far in September we have had a pullback.

I will keep you updated and get you timely information over the coming weeks.

Note: past performance is not an indication of future results and expectations might not materialize. Current investor concerns could evaporate as fast as they occurred.
