Asset Allocation: Where have we been?

Executive Summary

  • Since January 2022 our tactical Strategic Asset Management (SAM) portfolios have been invested in a preservation position.

  • A preservation position is invested in U.S. Treasury Bills.

  • How that strategy has done is in yellow in the table below.

  • Being in a preservation position has compared very favorably to many alternatives, ranking second in this example.

  • Comparative charts also follow.  You can see that a preservation position avoided large drawdowns.

DEFINITIONS

Asia ex Japan Index - The Asia ex Japan Index captures large and mid cap representation across 2 of 3 Developed Markets (DM) countries* (excluding Japan) and 8 Emerging Markets (EM) countries* in Asia. With 1,249 constituents, the index covers approximately 85% of the free floatadjusted market capitalization in each country.

CBOE 3 Mo Treasury Bill Index - The 3 Mo Treasury Bill is a debt obligation issued by the United States government with a maturity of 90 days upon initial issuance. A 3 month Treasury bill pays interest at maturity. The index tracks the current interest rate (yield) for the 3 Mo Treasury on a daily basis.

China Index – The China Index is a stock market index of all stocks (A shares and B shares) that are traded at the Shanghai Stock Exchange.

Dow Jones Corporate Bond Index – The Dow Jones Corporate Bond Index is designed to track the total returns of 100 large and liquid investment-grade bonds issued by companies in the U.S. corporate bond market.

Dow Jones World Index – an index of leading companies from around the world in all industries, covering both developed and emerging markets. The components are equally weighted, which means that price movements of the larger stocks have no greater impact on index performance than the price movements of the smaller stocks.

Philadelphia Semiconductor Index – is a Philadelphia Stock Exchange capitalization-weighted index composed of the 30 largest U.S. companies primarily involved in the design, distribution, manufacture, and sale of semiconductors.

S&P 400 Mid Cap Index - The S&P MidCap 400® provides investors with a benchmark for mid-sized companies. The index, which is distinct from the large-cap S&P 500®, is designed to measure the performance of 400 mid-sized companies, reflecting the distinctive risk and return characteristics of this market segment.

S&P 500 Equal Weighted Index - The S&P 500® Equal Weight Index (EWI) is the equal-weight version of the widely-used S&P 500. The index includes the same constituents as the capitalization weighted S&P 500, but each company in the S&P 500 EWI is allocated a fixed weight - or 0.2% of the index total at each quarterly rebalance.

S&P 500 Index - The modern design of the S&P 500 stock index was first launched in 1957. Performance back to 1950 incorporates the performance of predecessor index, the S&P 90. The index is a capitalization weighted index of the 500 large companies listed on various stock exchanges (such as the NYSE or NASDAQ). The S&P 500 was developed and continues to be maintained by S&P Dow Jones Indices, a joint venture majority-owned by S&P Global. The S&P 500 differs from the Dow Jones Industrial Average and the NASDAQ Composite index, because of its diverse constituency and weighting methodology. It is one of the most followed equity indices, and many consider it one of the best representations of the U.S. stock market.

S&P 600 Small Cap Index - The S&P SmallCap 600® seeks to measure the small-cap segment of the U.S. equity market. The index is designed to track companies that meet specific inclusion criteria to ensure that they are liquid and financially viable.

S&P Consumer Discretionary Sector Index - The index is a subcomponent of the S&P 500 Index. It invests in consumer discretionary companies.

S&P Financial Services Sector Index - The index is a subcomponent of the S&P 500 Index. It invests in banking and financial services companies.

Value Line 1600 Equal Weight Index - The Value Line 1600 Equal Weight Index is a stock index containing approximately 1,675 companies from the NYSE, American Stock Exchange, Nasdaq, Toronto, and over-the-counter markets.
